[Music] 0:09 thank you 0:10 [Music] 0:32 hello and welcome back to the Grant Hill 0:35 Chronicles podcast I am your host Dawn 0:37 Bishop today's episode is an update on 0:41 our live since we last spoke and this 0:43 conversation with my wife occurred on 0:45 the night of Monday January 9 2023 it is 0:49 now Saturday night of January the same 0:52 week as I edit this 0:55 and I'm dividing this conversation into 0:58 two episodes because of wildly different 1:01 topics that the first part today's 1:04 episode is 1:06 an update on our lives what's been going 1:09 on in our lives since the last episode 1:11 and the next episode is going to be kind 1:15 of what's been developing on the writing 1:18 and business side of things hopefully 1:19 business side of things and you'll hear 1:22 that next time 1:24 um but yeah for for this one while you 1:27 can read it in the newsletter or you can 1:29 listen to the podcast I do encourage you 1:31 to watch it on YouTube you can see some 1:34 images on the YouTube video that 1:36 obviously you can't hear 1:38 and I'm not going to include in the 1:40 newsletter 1:43 I apologize for the audio issues 1:45 throughout the episode during this 1:47 conversation 1:48 the microphone was too close to my phone 1:52 and you can hear 1:55 some audio artifacts that occur from 1:57 that now I need lesson learned for the 1:59 future right 2:01 and yeah enjoy and if you have any 2:04 questions send them to me and we'll talk 2:07 later 2:13 happy 2023 I'm Dawn and this is Lila and 2:18 we have a lot to talk about you can 2:20 consume this newsletter first of all you 2:22 can consume this newsletter 2:24 as an email podcast wherever you get 2:27 your podcasts or video on YouTube 2:31 um first of all what are we going to 2:33 talk about let's we should talk about us 2:35 what's been going on in our lives uh 2:38 what happened 2:40 yeah so we moved across the country and 2:42 we've actually lived in this area before 2:44 we 2:46 we lived here we bought a house here and 2:49 then work brought us across the country 2:52 opposite side of the country spent a 2:54 couple years over there come back and we 2:58 had our house here 3:00 uh lent out on Airbnb and when we came 3:05 back because of HOA reasons we had our 3:09 house under lease under a six-month 3:12 lease and it overlapped with our return 3:15 to our own house probably about a month 3:17 and a half right yep so we ourselves 3:19 rented an Airbnb to stay for about a 3:22 month and a half 3:23 and then the house reverted back to us 3:27 and we found out that they had been our 3:30 guests had been smoking in our house 3:33 for the last six months and not just 3:35 smoking yeah like 3:38 smoking yeah chain smoking just 3:42 evidently by the smell and the 130 some 3:46 odd cigarette butts that Lila found in 3:49 in the yard 3:51 um and that's not including the ones we 3:52 found in the ashtrays 3:55 yeah they smoked inside and out it was 3:57 in the house rules it was forbidden and 4:00 it was in the lease that they signed so 4:02 it was definitely not allowed and there 4:04 was a residue there was like tar 4:07 on excuse me on things we had our 4:10 cleaning team clean a lot and then we 4:13 went in there and it was definitely not 4:16 enough and we ran an ozonator that 4:18 releases ozone into the air to uh 4:22 chemically break down odorous compounds 4:26 and that did not suffice 4:30 professional uh smoke whatever spray 4:36 um we burned candles to try to cover it 4:39 and yeah the cigarette smoke was not the 4:42 only damage they also broke a lot of 4:45 things and made a lot of things go 4:46 missing they took a dining set like the 4:50 table and chairs oh my goodness out onto 4:52 the back patio 4:54 a wooden a wooden real wood not not a 4:58 material board or anything 5:00 um and left them on the back patio for 5:02 months 5:03 uh on the East Coast separate dining 5:05 lots of rain two separate dining sets so 5:08 they ruined yeah it was mixed two yeah 5:10 it was mixed they ruined two dining sets 5:12 uh and a rug they just looked up but it 5:16 doesn't really matter if they left it 5:17 out or not because their dog chewed up 5:20 all the corners of all the rugs anyway 5:22 so that's 5:25 yeah if if you really want you can ask 5:27 us questions uh send us questions at uh 5:31 questions at thorn.link and 5:35 I'll answer questions but um 5:38 not to get too much in the details we 5:41 suffered a loss and so we you know 5:44 Airbnb advertises their air cover 5:46 insurance 5:48 um and 5:50 so we have filed a claim and it just 5:53 takes time uh it took us a lot of our 5:57 time 5:58 to file the claim because we had to 6:00 document everything like all these 6:02 photos 6:04 providing descriptions uh and that that 6:07 took a few weeks then when it was 6:11 um sorry emitting into all the details 6:13 so it takes time 6:16 um it was very in-depth they had a 6:18 document how long you where you 6:21 um how long we'd had the item yeah how 6:24 much how much we paid for originally how 6:26 much it would cost to replace it just 6:28 just information very detailed like they 6:32 had their adjusters come out oh yeah so 6:34 we got quotes right 6:36 um 6:37 we we had our cleaning team do a lot of 6:39 cleaning uh and extra cleaning that is 6:42 necessitated by by a guests activities 6:46 is coverable supposedly and we had the 6:51 ducts cleaned and we had we we got 6:55 quotes from a company called Servpro 6:59 um that does professional smoke 7:01 restoration we got a quote for them to 7:04 come and clean the contents of the house 7:06 like take all the stuff out of the house 7:08 to their facility off-site and 7:10 professionally clean all the stuff and 7:12 bring it back there's a quote for that 7:13 and that's 20 000 bucks and uh a quote 7:17 to clean the inside of the house itself 7:19 like the structure with their special 7:23 methods or whatever 7:25 but the like clean all the walls and and 7:28 all that that's 26 000 bucks like one 7:32 room is a few thousand 7:35 um 7:36 and we got a quote to replace all the 7:38 carpet which oh we had that shampooed 7:41 also so like the the Ducks clean and the 7:43 shampooing uh were on our dime 7:46 for now if Airbnb comes through they're 7:49 supposed to 7:52 um reimburse those expenses so we'll see 7:55 how it pans out but 7:57 um yeah we have a quote to replace the 7:58 carpet and a quote to paint the interior 8:01 of the house as well so it it's been 8:03 eating a lot of our time for the past 8:05 couple of months uh it's now January 8:09 um 8:10 living out of suitcases the house came 8:12 back to us in early October August it 8:16 was it was three months ago when the 8:17 house reverted back to us yeah so when 8:21 we we were in an Airbnb ourselves house 8:23 came back to us and 8:26 with all this documentation that needed 8:29 to be done we went ahead and relocated 8:31 ourselves back into our house 8:33 but we slept on a mattress on a floor 8:35 and we've lived out of suitcases in our 8:37 own house because we can't move in 8:40 unless we want all our stuff to smell 8:42 like cigarettes so while we're in this 8:45 limbo and we we can't move into our own 8:47 house properly 8:49 we bought a new house 8:51 so we're moving and we've been moving 8:54 since July July was when we started 8:56 packing up 8:57 uh to to move across the country we 9:01 actually left in August we left the west 9:04 coast and and arrived here in August 9:07 and in September we were moving into the 9:10 Airbnb in October we're moving out of 9:12 the Airbnb and into our own house well 9:14 the kind of like suitcases only and this 9:16 isn't counting that time I spent in Utah 9:19 at my mom's house where we had to it you 9:22 know I had to set up a whole little life 9:23 there for a few weeks uh heard her late 9:27 mother's house 9:29 um that she she 9:31 uh takes care of as a as a rental which 9:34 is about generating any income for her 9:38 or her brothers it's just it's just well 9:40 it's kind of love yeah yeah yeah yeah 9:43 um but anyway so yeah I went with the 9:45 three kids and we 9:47 we had to set up and I worked so hard 9:49 because there's so much to do 9:51 and so that whole thing was stressful 9:53 and you know I had to pack so we had to 9:55 pack things to go straight to the 9:57 storage unit pack things to go on this 9:59 interim trip some of it was gonna then 10:02 go with my mother-in-law across the 10:04 country before us and so there was all 10:06 this staging of different types of 10:08 packing and then meanwhile Don was still 10:11 in California packing up most of our 10:14 stuff like finishing most of our stuff 10:17 and then so some of that went to the 10:20 storage unit some of it came to the 10:22 Airbnb where we stayed and this is all 10:24 like the kids are starting school and 10:27 everything all at once and it's been 10:28 major chaos yep we started moving in 10:31 July and it is now January and you can't 10:35 see on in this shot because I I paid 10:38 attention to what was in the shot but 10:39 we're surrounded by boxes uh we are not 10:42 moved in yet we are moving in 10:45 um 10:46 now we 10:47 we we managed to get a pretty nice house 10:50 this time around it's going to be a good 10:52 thing for the kids for for years to come 10:55 I feel uh we've got a good yard uh lots 11:00 of trees so I'm really happy about the 11:03 situation 11:05 um the physical situation in which we 11:06 find ourselves now uh we just have to 11:09 settle into it and make it make it a 11:11 real thing you can rest up a little bit 11:14 somehow and paint 11:17 uh this room is 11:19 um burnt orange 11:21 and I have I have nothing against Texas 11:24 Tech 11:25 but uh it's it's a bit strong for the 11:29 color of a room 11:30 um 11:31 so yeah we we've been painting other 11:33 parts of the house they they were not 11:35 burnt orange this is the only room 11:37 that's this particular shade uh but 11:39 there was a there was a room upstairs 11:41 with a Bama crimson red wall 11:45 uh that's a white wall now anyway so 11:48 yeah we're settling in we're making the 11:51 house ours and there's a little bit of 11:54 that still to come also um I've got my 11:58 day job just working away so I I don't 12:01 have 12:02 all the time I would like to to work on 12:05 on settling in 12:07 um 12:08 but yeah that's kind of 12:10 what's been going on with us and the 12:12 kids 12:14 um 12:14 they're in school and their school is 12:17 really early 12:20 starts at 7 30 in the morning and the 12:24 bus so the bus passes by our old house 12:28 at about 6 50. 12:31 um sometimes 6 45 650 sometimes 6 55 and 12:35 now at the new house we're a little bit 12:37 farther away from the school still the 12:38 same school 12:39 uh the bus is supposed to come by here 12:42 at 6 30. 12:45 um my poor kids there's no time to live 12:48 it it kind of almost works because I can 12:52 drive them to school on my way to work 12:56 um but it's it's the timing is tight 13:00 anyway 13:01 so there we are and that's that's kind 13:04 of us so 13:07 this is still the uh the newsletter for 13:10 the grind Hill Chronicles and the Grant 13:11 Hill Chronicles podcast so let's talk 13:13 about that side of things 13:17 thank you for joining us on the podcast 13:19 today 13:21
